India to let Bangladesh use its territory for power import from Nepal

India has given its assent to allow Bangladesh to import electricity from Nepal through its territory, said state minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid.

Nasrul Hamid stated this Tuesday following his meeting with Indian high commissioner in Dhaka Pankaj Saran at the power ministry office at Bangladesh secretariat.

Bangladesh intends to import electricity from a Nepalese power plant set up by an Indian company GMR. But reports have it that the Indian bureaucracy has been creating impediments to the Bangladesh move.

Apparently the Indian envoy in Dhaka has made his country’s stance clear on the issue through making the assurance to support.

Bangladesh’s move, Nasrul Hamid referred Indian prime minister’s recent Nepal visit where he made a deal with Nepal to facilitate GMR’s investment in the Himalayan nation.

He also said that India wants to jointly conduct hydrocarbon exploration in Bangladesh.
“India is very keen to carry out joint exploration in the hydrocarbon sector.”
